The Palio of Siena is one of the most anticipated summer events in Tuscany. Italy’s most famous horse race boasts centuries-old origins and takes place twice a year in the iconic Piazza del Campo, Siena’s main shell-shaped square.
On July 2 and August 16 each year, the city transforms into a magical place full of emotion for this event. For the locals, this is not just a horse race, it is a way of life and their pride, passion and commitment are palpable. The city is divided into 17 contrade or districts and only 10 of them can take part in each race.
